Sun Safety on the 4th of July in Sarasota

Whether you’re planning to head to the beach with friends, celebrate at home with family, or enjoy a solo day of adventure this 4th of July, being mindful of potential sun damage risks and practicing active prevention tips is essential for enjoying your day without getting a painful (and dangerous) sunburn.

Prepare Ahead

Planning to head to the beach early to get the best spot? Packing up coolers for a day out on the boat or at a park? Whatever your plans for the 4th of July, don’t forget to include sun protection in your preparations!

Apply sunscreen 15-30 minutes before heading out for the day to allow time for your skin to absorb it. Be sure to use at least SPF 30 and bring your bottle or tube with you – you’ll need to reapply it at least every 2 hours while outdoors. If you’re planning on getting in the water, you may need to reapply more often or opt for a water-resistant formula for added safety. Remember, UV rays can penetrate up to 12 feet of water, so you’re still at risk.

Drink Responsibly and Stay Hydrated

Having a few drinks is a common part of many Independence Day festivities, but make sure you’re keeping track of how much alcohol you’re consuming.

Drinking alcohol can increase your risk of getting a sunburn, particularly because you’re more likely to forget to apply and re-apply sun protection. Other factors include exacerbating the effects of dehydration, which can lead to heat exhaustion as well. Staying hydrated with cool, refreshing water helps your body metabolize any alcohol you consume while also helping to protect your skin against sun damage.

Sunburn First Aid Essentials

Sunburns happen, even when we try our best to prevent them. Being prepared to treat a sunburn can help minimize the damage and lasting effects sunburns can have on our skin’s overall health.

To treat a sunburn:

  • Get out of the sun as soon as possible
  • Apply soothing aloe vera to the affected area
    • For larger sunburns, a cool (NOT cold) bath can help
  • Don’t pull at peeling skin, and leave any blisters alone
  • Drink water to help rehydrate, and use a gentle moisturizer on the skin
  • If pain continues, take an over-the-counter pain reliever

If you or someone you love does experience a sunburn this 4th of July, it’s important to see a dermatologist as soon as possible. While it may seem like a minor inconvenience that will resolve on its own, sunburns can cause serious, lasting damage to the skin. Just 5 significant sunburns in your lifetime can significantly increase your risk of developing skin cancer.
